The Navgraha Shanti Puja is one of the most comprehensive and transformative rituals in Vedic tradition. Nav means nine, graha means planets (literally "that which grasps" — signifying cosmic forces that influence human life), and shanti means peace or pacification. The puja is a formal ceremony to honour all nine celestial bodies recognized in Jyotish — the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu — and to pacify any that are causing difficulty in one's life.
Each planet governs specific domains of life, and each has associated deities, mantras, colours, grains, metals, and directions. In the Navgraha Shanti Puja, all nine are worshipped simultaneously in the correct sequence, with specific offerings to each. The ritual calls upon divine forces to neutralize planetary afflictions and invite the higher, benevolent dimensions of each graha's energy into the devotee's life.
An astrologer will typically recommend this puja in several situations. First, when a person is going through a particularly challenging Mahadasha or Antardasha — especially Saturn Dasha, Rahu Dasha, or Ketu Dasha — the puja is performed to ease the karmic weight of that period. Second, when the natal chart shows multiple planetary afflictions or several planets placed in dusthana houses (6th, 8th, 12th). Third, when someone is experiencing simultaneous setbacks across multiple life areas — health, career, relationships, and finances all struggling at once, often indicating a broader planetary imbalance. Fourth, when entering major life transitions such as marriage, the birth of a child, starting a business, or moving to a new home.
A complete Navgraha Shanti Puja typically takes 3–5 hours and is conducted by a qualified Vedic priest (pandit). The ceremony includes:
Yes — and in the modern era, remote Navgraha pujas have become both widely accepted and highly effective. The devotee provides their name, gotra, birth details, and intention (sankalpa) to the performing pandit, who then conducts the full ceremony on their behalf. The sacred science holds that the power of the mantra and intention transcends physical proximity. Many devotees across India and abroad have experienced significant positive shifts following remote Navgraha Shanti Pujas performed by a qualified and experienced ritualist.
A full Navgraha Shanti Puja once a year — particularly on Ratha Saptami (Sun worship), Pradosh (Shiva-Shani worship), or during significant transit periods (Saturn changing signs, Rahu-Ketu axis shift) — is considered highly beneficial. For individuals under heavy planetary affliction or during Saturn's Sade Sati (seven-and-a-half-year transit over the natal Moon), it may be recommended twice a year. On a daily basis, simply lighting a diya (lamp) in front of the Sun at dawn while chanting the Gayatri Mantra, and offering water to the Moon on Mondays, keeps the planetary energies balanced at the household level.
While the collective Navgraha Puja pacifies all nine planets, many people also perform individual graha pujas when a specific planet is weak, afflicted, or currently running as the Mahadasha lord. Here is a brief overview:
Whether you are performing the puja yourself at home or having it conducted by a pandit, some basic preparation improves the quality of the ritual:
Fast (or eat sattvic food only) on the day of the puja. Bathe and wear clean, preferably white or yellow, clothing. Sit facing east. Have the nine graha yantras or idols arranged correctly, along with flowers, incense, ghee lamp, and the specific offerings (dravya) for each planet. The puja is most effective when performed with genuine bhav (heartfelt intention) rather than mechanically.
For remote pujas conducted by Pooja Ji, you will be asked to share your full name, date of birth, and sankalp (intention). The puja is performed with your name and gotra, and a video or photo of the completed ritual is shared with you. Prasad can also be couriered on request.
A single well-performed Navgraha Puja creates a positive shift in your planetary energy — many people report feeling lighter, calmer, and experiencing small but noticeable improvements within days. However, for deep-seated planetary afflictions (like a debilitated planet in the 8th house or a difficult Dasha period), a series of pujas performed over several weeks gives more sustained results. Pooja Ji recommends combining the puja with simple daily practices like chanting the relevant graha mantra 108 times, which reinforces the puja's effects over time.
